- It’s almost confirmed if English is the Medium of Instruction at School or undergraduation (Bachelors) or for atleast 2 college years. Individual College Policy matters
- Prior International education from an English Speaking nation is yet another Key!
- “Added Pluses” could be SAT/GRE/GMAT scores and More
- Pl. stay specific – Avoid Long paragraphs/excess-emotiveness/”pleading”

Jillian Skinner says
Hello MBA Admission Gurus: My name is Jillian Skinner, an American student in the state of Michigan.
I am looking to go overseas for college. In order to finish my application it says I need a TOEFL form saying I passed the English test. The application said though if my language is English that I would get a waiver to say I don’t need to take the test. What do I need to do in order to obtain this waiver?
Pl. advise. Thanks
MBA Admission Gurus says
Greetings Jillian,
Since your native language is English, TOEFL is really not mandatory. I would simply send a letter requesting a waiver in a format similar to the sample letter here. Admissions will typically revert in a day or two granting the waiver. IF your program does need a GRE/SAT or GMAT and if the score is really low and/or the college ranking is very high, they, as yet, might request TOEFL. However, we won’t know till the waiver email is sent. So pl. go ahead with the waiver request. Do write back in case of any more queries in the matter.
Sincerely,
Haresh Kodnani
Michelle Leon says
Hello Gurus: Is there a particular format or letter that the institutions require for waiver of IELTS and TOEFL? and what is it that the university requires from the institution that would grant a waiver
MBA Admission Gurus says
Hello Michelle:
1. TOEFL and IELTS is usually needed in case of non-native English speakers, especially international applicants.
2. Waivers are granted if the said applicant has completed his schooling and all further education in a setting where the medium of instruction is English.
3. Work experience with a multi-national (where English is pre-dominant) is also a definite plus; however by itself it may not be a qualifier
Finally, there is no format set by institutions, to our knowledge. However, you can use the sample request letter as a guidance for a structure for communications on this matter.
Hope this helps! Cheers

My Name in Joel Jaenz from Honduras. Last year, I came to study at The Christ for the Nations Institute. This is my 2nd year here at Christ for the Nations.
All my classes have been based in English. I am further trying to apply for a scholarship from another university to accelerate my career.
I wanted to know if I am eligible for a TOEFL waiver. Please guide me.
God bless you,

MBA Admission Gurus says
Greetings Joel,
From what we understand, you are an international applicant to an educational program in the United States or A European Union Nation.
Typically the universities in the US grant such waivers and the ones in EU usually insist on either TOEFL or IELTS regardless of prior language media and background.
If all your earlier education has been via the English medium, you may request a TOEFL waiver. Work experience in Multinationals (US or British origin especially) is a definite plus too.
Hope this answers your question.Pl. feel free to write back for further clarifications..
Cheers!
David
