Maryland University, Smith Business School – Career Goals, Why MBA and Why Smith Essay

What are your specific post-graduate short-term and long-term goals? How will the Smith MBA assist you in achieving your goals? Finally, please discuss your personal and professional motivations for pursuing a graduate degree.

Early-on in my career, I realized my passion for developing businesses and swiftly identifying and capturing untapped new business/market opportunities. Starting my career in Insurance Underwriting that included Risk Management, Proposal Writing and Pricing of Insurance products, I moved over to Banking to increase my knowledge of banking products. I thus advised Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) on complex financing issues – offering a Single Point Solution for their needs. My growth from functional (client relations) to zonal business responsibilities followed as turnaround objectives were achieved – often quicker and “more profitable” than expected. Steady promotion to the next level of challenges and increased strategic and leadership responsibilities followed.  Functioning as an entrepreneur, I could successfully integrate the launch of new products with the marketing and analytics and parallely reduce costs to achieve a turnaround in various assigned businesses. Over the last 6 months, I have steadily transitioned from handling SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) clients to large-scale corporations – thus broadening my exposure across various functions and products and the entire spectrum of market segments in the business.

My near-term goal post-M.B.A is, thus, to work with enterprise clientele of all scales (from small business to global corporations) as a Management Consultant. With an earlier background of heading large-scale product development, sales and marketing and operational successes in an emerging market,  I will be able to add value by bringing in pragmatic and as yet, creative solutions to complex business challenges.  Working with a Management Consulting firm will bring in the opportunity to assist clients in succeeding across multiple geographies and international markets. It will also facilitate my Long Term goal of establishing a Consulting Practice that will advise global companies on their market entry and product strategies for India. It will also provide expansion strategies for Indian enterprises – thus enabling them to succeed on a global scale.   My firm will specially focus on the Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) – identifying global opportunities for their products and services as well as facilitating alternate financing opportunities for their growth.

An MBA program from the R. H. Smith School forms an important step towards the actualization of my growth objectives. While my earlier education did equip me well for the objectives at that stage, the school’s program will enable understanding at an international and cross-functional level of enterprise complexity and at the perfect stage to be able to apply such learnings. Hailing from an industry that continues to be dramatically transformed by Globalization, Entrepreneurship and Technology (“GET”) – the program provides the perfect platform prepare for a higher level of responsibilities in the business.  The program’s electives in, often, cutting-edge areas (Creation of High Potential Ventures & Strategic Growth of Emerging Companies) are well-suited to my learning objectives. Furthermore, “hands-on” venues such as the”MBA Consulting Program” and “Netcentricity Laboratories” bring in the opportunity to be closely guided by globally renowned faculty/consultants – thus fortifying various learnings.  The school’s Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship provides networking opportunities with the area’s rich base of technology entrepreneurs and investors through its Baltimore-Washington Venture Group and Private Investors Network. Venues such as the university’s $50,000 Business Plan competition, the Business Plan Review Course and the National Venture Capital Competition provide numerous opportunities to put theory to practice.

The R. H. Smith School ranks among the premier, truly global business schools with multiple levels of student diversity and excellence. The School’s location in Washington, D.C, the seat of the Federal Government as also numerous Government-Funded corporations will result in unique learning opportunities that are nowhere else possible.  Such a platform to interact with globally diverse student community and Alumni will bring in the opportunity to learn cutting-edge business practices and will also prepare me to excel in a global arena.
